Step by Step Guide to Cleaning Upholstery

Step-by-Step Guide to Cleaning Upholstery

Keeping upholstery clean can be a tricky task. Whether you’re dealing with pet stain and dirt stains from daily use, or aged upholstery, follow this step-by-step guide to get the job done right.

Step 1: Determine The Fabric Type

Before you start to work on cleaning, it’s important to determine the fabric type. Different fabrics require different cleaning methods and solutions. Synthetic fabrics require a mild detergent, while natural fabrics require a milder approach.

Step 2: Vacuum the Area

Before you start any sort of cleaning, it’s important to vacuum the area. Vacuuming will get rid of any dirt, dust and other debris that might interfere with the cleaning process. Make sure to get every nook and cranny, as this will make sure that when you begin to clean, the dirt will be easy to remove.

Step 3: Prepare the Cleaning Solution

Once you’ve determined the fabric type, it’s important to prepare the appropriate cleaning solution. For synthetic fabrics, mix one part detergent and one part water. For natural fabrics, mix a teaspoon of white vinegar and a quart of warm water.

Step 4: Test the Solution

Before you start to clean, it’s important to test the solution. Choose an area that is out of sight, such as the back of the furniture, and apply a bit of the cleaning solution. Wait a few minutes to see if the solution causes any color loss or discoloration. If it does, use a more diluted solution or plain water.

Step 5: Start Cleaning

Once you’re sure the cleaning solution won’t damage the upholstery, start cleaning. Work in small sections, using a sponge or soft cloth to gently scrub the upholstery in a circular motion. Once you’ve worked through the section, move onto the next, repeating the process until the entire piece is clean.

Step 6: Blot the Area

Once you’ve completed the cleaning process, you’ll need to dry the upholstery. Get a clean, dry towel and use it to gently blot the area. Once you’ve blotted as much of the moisture as possible, let the piece dry completely.

Step 7: Enjoy Your Clean Upholstery

Once your furniture is completely dry, it’s time to enjoy your clean upholstery. You should notice immediately that the furniture looks brighter and cleaner. With proper care and maintenance, it should stay like this for many years to come.
